Spanning the period between the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and the years just after World War I, Against the Day takes readers on a journey through an array of settings and events, including:

• The labour troubles in Colorado.
• Turn-of-the-century New York.
• London, Venice, Siberia, and Mexico during the revolution.
• Silent-era Hollywood.
• And even one or two places not strictly speaking on the map at all.

It is a time defined by:

• Unrestrained corporate greed.
• False religiosity.
• Moronic fecklessness.
• Evil intent in high places.
