This book is the culmination of 15 years of research and travels, taking the author completely around the world twice, as well as on additional journeys in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and around the Pacific rim.

Its purpose is to explore and understand the role of cultural differences, both within nations and between them, across centuries of history. The book examines how these cultural differences have shaped the economic and social fates of peoples and entire civilizations.
