Enemy of the Disaster is the first authorized translation of Renaud Camus' political writings to appear in English, featuring his notorious 2010 speech, "The Great Replacement." Although it has been forty-two years since his work was last translated into English, Camus is still widely and often irresponsibly discussed in the media. His vast and complex oeuvre is frequently reduced to a single phrase, stripped of all context. In the English-speaking world, he has become the opposite of an author—a floating signifier, a rumor, an element in someone else's narrative.
This volume seeks to change that perception. Spanning the years 2007–2017, its ten chapters present a very different Camus—one freed from the opportunistic interpretations of both "friends" and foes. Readers will discover:
The book begins with a critical Introduction by Professor Louis Betty of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In this Introduction, Betty aims to liberate Camus from the polemical misrepresentations that have clouded his reputation. He situates Camus within the context of recent French debates on immigration and identity—debates that have only intensified since Camus first entered the scene. Furthermore, each chapter is thoroughly annotated to assist non-French readers in navigating potentially unfamiliar references.
Enemy of the Disaster is an invaluable resource for any serious student of contemporary France. However, the issues it tackles—immigration, identity, culture, education, and the future of humanity itself—extend far beyond the French context. These are global concerns that we must all confront sooner or later. By shedding light on what we have abandoned in our relentless pursuit of an increasingly posthuman future, Renaud Camus challenges us to reflect deeply on the path we are taking.
