Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn, one of the most famous anti-Communist dissidents, was a multifaceted figure: war veteran, philosopher, historian, novelist, and political prisoner. Born in Russia, he initially embraced Marxist-Leninism and fought for the Red Army during the Second World War. However, his private criticism of Joseph Stalin led to his arrest and an eight-year imprisonment within the brutal Soviet gulag system.
Over time, Solzhenitsyn rejected Communism and returned to the Christian faith of his upbringing. His writings increasingly provoked Soviet authorities, culminating in his deportation in 1974.
In exile, Solzhenitsyn grew disenchanted with the values of modern Western nations. He criticized their lack of spirituality and tradition, believing these deficiencies produced individuals with weak ties to God, their ancestral land, and each other. His warnings about the downfall of the West were persistent and unwavering.
